Shooting a brand film in forty minutes of light

Behind the scenes of the Fable Coffee film: one location, one golden hour, a crew of five and a shot list ruthless enough to fit.

Tomás Reis

Head of Motion

Golden hour is generous for exactly forty minutes. For the Fable Coffee film we had one evening on the Algarve coast and no budget for a second.

Plan backwards from the sun

We built the shot list from sunset backwards: wide establishing shots in the hardest light, close-ups as it softened, silhouettes in the final six minutes. Every set-up was rehearsed at noon.

Small crew, fast moves

Five people, one gimbal, no lighting truck. A small crew can follow the light instead of fighting it — and the talent relaxes when there are fewer people watching.

The final film is sixty seconds long and 92% of viewers watch it to the end. The sun did most of the work.
